Fascinating Divine Inspiration

1. Introduction

Bible is not merely a collection of Jewish and Christian books. It is really the Word of God. It becomes the Word of God as it has been written with divine inspiration. So what is Divine Inspiration? God being a spirit how did He revealed His mind to human authors. It is the grace or a blessing a person received from God by way of revelation, persuasion, by way of directing, by way of manipulation. Holy Spirit or spirit of the omnipotence eternal loving God penetrated or breathed to the minds of authors or who wrote the Bible at the time of writing the Holy Scripture. Therefore the Holy Bible is the divinely inspired Word of omnipotence God through His Spirit. At the time of writing the Holy Word, the Holy Spirit penetrated the minds of the human authors. Thus the main author of the Holy Bible is God himself. Coauthors are human authors.

2.Oral Tradition

One might question how did the inspired word of God was endowed or gifted from generations to generation when the humans lacked writing ability. The answer is the oral tradition or by way of mouth. This was true at the time of Patriarchs (B.C 2000 – 1600) Later on the Divine Word existed as oral tradition and step by step became the written word over the years. It is a long history which cannot be included under this website. I have tried to summarize the development briefly HERE Now it is the Inspired Holy Bible comprised of 73 books scribed by 40 authors. The priests and hierarchy of the early church accepted the fact the Holy Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and the chief author is God himself. Pope Leo the xiii (2 March 1810 to 20 July 1903), said in his Universal Providentissimus Deus Paragraph 1.(1) the chief author of the Holy Bible is God Himself and the co-authors (or instruments) are men.

3. Dynamic Oral Word.

According to the Sematic mentality spoken word is dynamic than the written word. Steps had to be taken to explain how the written scripture became the word of God. In the beginning Ten Commandments were used for this purpose. Moses was on the Mount Sinai for 40 days. and according to the God’s command Ten Commandments were written on mud slabs (writing ability on mud slabs was in existence before Moses as per History of Mesopotamia) and Moses presented them to Israelites at the Mount Sinai (Exodus 20) what he has written on mud slabs (Exodus 34: 28). If the Ten Commandments were the Words of God, then whole of law, (Tora – Pentateuch) is word of God. Later on spoken word of God was transferred to written word. The basis of law (Tora - Pentateuch) is the Ten Commandments. The written word is not a dynamic than spoken word because it is an indirect mode of communication. When the spoken word was transferred to written word God Commanded, Do not add to what I command you and not subtract them from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you. (Duet. 4:2) Thus the written word became the measuring rod of the truth.

4. Varieties of Divine Inspiration

When spoken about Divine Inspiration one might think it is limited only to writing of the Holy Bible. No. Divine Inspiration consist of 3 varieties.

(a) Pastoral Inspiration
It is the Divine inspiration given to a person to act. When leaders of the Israel were appointed Divine Inspiration was given to appoint.Few Examples are- Sampson (Judges 14:6 – 10), Moses ( Exodus 3:10), David ( 1 Samuel 16:13), David ( 1 Samuel 16:13),Messiah (Luke 4: 18 – 19),
(b) Divine Inspiration to Preach
It is the Divine Inspiration given to preachers who spoke about the message of God. God influenced some people to speak in His name. They received the inspiration to speak only about the word of God. Few Examples are - Ezekiel 11:5,Jeremiah 1:14, Isaiah 59:21, Hosea, 3:8, 11:7, 2Peter, 1:21, 2Timothy, 3:16
( c ) Divine Inspiration to write
It is the Divine Inspiration to write the Word of God under the revelation of the Word of God. In other words Divine Word was written under the influence of God. Thus Influence or Inspiration was a command to write the Word of God. Few Examples are Exodus,17:14, Jeremiah, 30:2, Isaiah, 30:8,Deut, 5:22, 31:24m

Thus Holy Bible is not just a collection Jewish & Christian books It is the final result of the above mentioned 3 varieties of Divine Inspiration. It is written with Divine Inspiration as for St. Pauls letter written to Timothy (2 Timothy3:16) ‘All scripture is God breathed and ……..’

5.Divine Inspiration and Divine Revelation.

Divine Inspiration and Divine revelation are embedded together. Where there is no Divine revelation there is no divine Inspiration and vice versa. These two get activated at the same moment. It is just like they are just like Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Divine Word. This word is explained by Holy Spirit. But Jesus is Holy Spirit. Two persons are not equal. But where Jesus Christ is, Holy Spirit exists there. Thus action of Divine Revelation and Divine Inspiration can be explained in the same way.

6. Meaning of Inspiration

What is the etymology of the word Inspiration? The Latin word is inspirare. The Greek adjective is theopneustos: God-breathed, i.e. inspired by God. In other words 'Theopneustos' means God-breathed. Therefore we say that Scripture has been breathed-out by God.

It is God who initiate inspiration of Scripture. The writers did not initiate the words of the Bible. Peter says in 2 Pet. 1:21, "for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." Note that what Peter is stating that prophecy is not the product of human will. Instead, prophecy occurs by those moved by the Holy Spirit.

7. God Revealed the Word and Directed human authors.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. (Psalm 37:23) and A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9) Also I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.(Psalm 32:8)

Prophet Isaiah says The Lord will guide you continually.(Isaiah 58:11)Notice the specific words that God will guide you continually, be our guide even to death, guide you with His eye, leads you by the way you should go, teaches you to profit, instructs you and directs your paths. Thus God has directed all the Bible writers the way He wants to write the Scripture.

Thus the Spirit of God guaranteed the accuracy of everything that was written. This process extended until the time the document was written. The divine author of Scripture is God the Holy Spirit. Exactly how this process worked is a mystery. Scripture asserts that this did happen without explaining exactly how it happened.

As per web Definition The Word of God is a manifestation of the mind and will of God. This clearly shows that Gods thoughts penetrate to our minds in some way.

10. Faith in Holy Bible the Inspired Word of God

Human authors compile an event in the form of a story, God supplied the message. With the development of modern technology, with instruments such as satellites, most of the events mentioned in the Bible are found true. Red sea crossing, Great floods, destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, King David Palace, Noah's ark some of the popular findings. Though some say most of the stories appearing in the Bible are myths, history books of the countries, books written by various authors, historical events prove otherwise. If one says Bible is full of mythical stories, the four Gospels become myths also. Then the 2.5 billion people in the world who believe in Christ, his birth death and resurrection become a myth. All these people and 2.1 billion Muslims belief in one almighty God is meaningless.

Let us have great faith in His inspired word. If someone can counter argue let him do so. But the truth is under tribulations, destructions The Word of God has withstood and will withstand any threat in the future, because loving God has persevered His Word. This Word brings comfort and security to those who trust in Him and His Word, which promises salvation through His Son. The covenant God has made with His children is unshakeable, for God who cannot lie, has both made a promise and confirmed it by an oath (Heb. 6:13-18)

11.Power of Word and the Whole Creation

Biblical word itself is the nature and totality of the inspired of God. St. John in (1:3) says,All things were made through Him, and without him was not anything made that were made. The inspired word continues through St. Paul in his letter to Colossians 1:15-20 says that Jesus is the first born of the invisible God. That is the first born of the whole creation.

12. Unparalleled Challenges and Protection of the Word of God

The Word of God was preserved throughout centuries through tribulation in the history of man. It was protected from various natural calamities. He will do so in the future as well. God almighty uses humanity to protect and preserve the Divine Word. God directs the humans to preserve the Word as Books, in magnetic tapes, digitally in CDs and Videos. The future of the Word God and how it will be preserved in the ever changing world only He knows. Only He will decide who will be protecting and preserving it. As it is The Holy Bible is the most popular Book in the world.

In the beginning God protected His Holy word through generations and gifted through generations orally. We call it oral tradition. Later humans chosen by God wrote them with various means as per existed methods. The gift that loving God gave these men to write the Scripture is called INSPIRATION Therefore "no prophetic message ever came just from the will of man, but men were under the control of the Spirit of God as they spoke the word or message which came from God."(2 Peter 1:21)

13. Power of Daily reading the Holy Bible- Press here

Each time you listen, hear, and obey the words of God, the Lord writes his words in the flesh of your heart; which is the engrafted word, which is able to save your soul.( James 1:21.) The more you hear, the more the word abides in you; the more it abides in you, the more it controls you - the more you are doing his will, not yours. The more you hear and see revealed in your heart by the Word in your heart, the more you understand the things of God.

14) What King David said about the Inspired word of God

(Psalm 119 and Inspired Word Of God):

I keep your law in my heart, so that I will not sin against you.(vs.11)

I will delight delight myself in Your statutes: I will not forget Your word.(vs.16)

Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.(vs. 105)

You are my hiding place and my shield: I hope in Your word.(vs.114)

Your word is true from the beginning..........(vs. 160).

15) Did Jesus really exist? Is there any historical evidence of Jesus Christ?

There is overwhelming evidence to prove the existence of Jesus Christ, both in secular and biblical history. Perhaps the greatest evidence that Jesus did exist is the fact that literally thousands of Christians in the first century A.D., including the twelve apostles, were willing to give their lives as martyrs for Jesus Christ. People will die for what they believe to be true, but no one will die for what they know to be a lie. Press Here for More on the Subject"

Jesus the Eternal Word

As per John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.(The Word is God, not the Bible! Jesus Christ is the Word of God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and there was nothing made without him. (John 1:2-3) You cannot be born again by scripture, reading or hearing it read; but you can be born again by the Spirit, as you respond to hearing and obeying the Spirit, or the word of God within your heart.

(John 8:37 ) I know that you are Abraham's descendants; but you seek to kill me, because my word [teachings heard] has no place in you.

16) Jesus is the source of our relationship with God

As per Worldometers out 7.5 billion of the total population in the world 2.173 billion are Christians. The faith of all these people is based on the Holy Bible or the Word of God. All the Christians believe in One Almighty God, in Holy Trinity, death and everlasting life. They all believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, The Word 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me' (John 14:6). (John 1:1).

Why one third of the world populations believe in the Holy Bible or the Word of God? All these Christians believe that the Word of God is infallible and inspired by God. Day by day this number is getting increased just like number of births per day is getting increased by thousands. God is inspiring the people to read and believe in The Word of God. Day by day inspiration of God over the authors who wrote the Bible or the Word of God is been proved with new findings.

As the world is developing the sciences, the subjects like Archaeology and Bibliography are better understood. Archaeologists are inspired to find more sites which have biblical background. More and more findings will expose the Bible to a better understanding. The facts mentioned in the Bible, ultimately will prove the Words, 40 authors have written in 73 books under one theme. Omnipotence God has inspired these authors to interpret the Word of God in different languages.

17) The Source of the Inspired Word.

A source is a point from which something or someone originates. The inspired word originated from God through the word as John (1:1 - 2) In the beginning was the word and word was with God and the word was God. Not only the Word as per Genesis (1:2) the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. In other words the Holy Trinity, God the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit was present from the beginning. At the time of creation The Word of God made it possible to create the whole universe from nothing but from His word.

Before creating the man God said as inGenesis ( 1:26)” let us make the man in our own image" The plural word US shows that all the three persons were involved at the moment of creating man.

18) Eternal God dwelling amongst us

God made the creation from nothing. His word made the creation possible. When God uttered the word all things were made. In Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light, and there was light . As (Genesis 1:1 to 31) the whole creation was made through the WORD. As mentioned above the three persons in Trinity were present at the time of creation and continuing within the creation. To the present day God is active and continuing His work in creating, evolving and sustaining the creation through His Word. Later in order to bring back the fallen sinful man to His fold the Word became flesh through the Spirit of God as per John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.

Before Moses God spoke to Adam, Eve, Cain, Noah, Abraham and later to all other Patriarchs of the Old Testament. Then he spoke to all the prophets.

19) Interesting Adventure of eternal God among the Humanity

Now comes the finer part of the adventure of God throughout history of humanity. He made his son or the Word or the second person of the Trinity who was present during the creation to incarnate in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit. As mentioned above in John 1:14" The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us ". For 33 years The Word as Jesus Christ dwelled among humanity and completed partially the adventure of God among the humans by dying on the Cross after unbearable sufferings. He spoke and taught sublime word of God to people and to this day we Christians read, listen and meditate the word Jesus Christ has spoken during His public life. To his day His spoken Word is live among us. After three days He rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven after 4o days. His ascension resulted in the coming down of Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity who gave power to disciples to speak boldly the word of God and commence the Church of God.

20) Inspired eternal Word among Man

Adventure of the Word, Spirit and the Father still continue among us. The inspired Word of God is alive. It will not fade away as Jesus has said Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35) Today we experience the presence of God in total silence. God has inspired and still inspiring and illuminated the minds of men such as countless saints, men and women throughout the years. The Inspiration they received from the eternal living Word made their lives acceptable to Eternal God and they became saints. How does the inspiration works among us. Our minds are given the understanding during our meditations, prayer or in time of silence or allow us to see through our minds eye what God wants us to do or what He wants to say to us. There are numerous examples in the history of the church to prove these facts.

Bible verses

21) Lifetime influence of Word of God to inspire humanity

How did all the authors of the Bible understood the inspired word of God? In what language did He speak to them? God can be experienced in total silence. God has inspired or breathed, or shown, or illuminated the minds of men such as Moses, Noah, David, and numerous other prophets, through the signs of the times or through many other methods which only the person concern understood. At the time of meditation or in total silence God inspired countless saints, mystics or many believers. Sometimes they may have seen through their minds eye. Some see vividly what God wants to say. At the time of Jesus 12 apostle just followed Jesus the Word Incarnate even without experiencing a single miracle. Thus Jesus the Word of God inspired them to follow Him. Thus inspiration of God is experienced in many ways. Through vision, through signs, through uttered word, through divine look, through natural phenomenon God may have inspired human authors to write His divine word. The methods followed may have been one or more of above or may be through more unknown methods not mention here.

Just I have mentioned above how a shepherd king David was able to utter sublime words to praise God in Psalms. To this day we use them to praise God in the church liturgy. He in fact spoke about the word of God which he may have heard as a shepherd in his loneliness in the green pastures. God knew heart of David and chose this shepherd boy even to kill Goliath (1 Samuel 17) and to be the king of Israel. (1 Samuel 16:12)

Thus inspiration of God has worked and works in so many ways. The word of God in the Trinity and the incarnate Word of God, Jesus though the Holy Spirit is the source of the Inspired Word of God which imparts to human authors and to many others His Holy Sublime Word.
